Spiritual authority in Jesus Christ: a God-centered battle
1. Giving thanks to God
We open our hearts by thanking the Lord for His faithfulness, His protection, His provision and His presence in every circumstance.
2. The importance of prayer and consecration
We are called to:
- Thank God for His blessings.
- Repent of our sins.
- Bring our needs before the Lord.
- Pray for our families, our work, our health and our spiritual growth.
3. The Lord’s Supper
This sacred moment reminds us of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, invites us to self-examination, strengthens the unity of believers and carries the hope of Christ’s return.
4. Understanding spiritual warfare
Spiritual warfare is real, but we must not focus on demons. Our eyes stay fixed on Jesus Christ, the source of every victory.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Ephesians 6:12
5. The believer’s authority
Jesus has already won the victory on the cross (Colossians 2:15). Believers fight from that victory, not to obtain it. Their authority flows from Jesus’ authority and is exercised with faith, wisdom and obedience to the Word.
6. The main battlefield: our thoughts
The fiercest attacks come through fear, discouragement, doubt and the enemy’s lies. We answer with the Word, as Jesus did when he was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).
“Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
Matthew 4:7
7. Putting on the armor of God
We put on the armor described in Ephesians 6:
- The belt of truth
- The breastplate of righteousness
- Feet ready with the gospel
- The shield of faith
- The helmet of salvation
- The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
Key message
Victory over the powers of darkness has already been won in Jesus Christ. Let us stand firm in faith, know the Word, persevere in prayer and confidently exercise the authority Christ has given us.
