Jesus, the Good, Great and Chief Shepherd: love, power and authority
Jesus, the Good Shepherd
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
John 10:11
The Good Shepherd knows each sheep personally, protects them from spiritual danger, leads them to the truth and gives himself for their salvation. Unlike a hired hand who abandons the flock in a crisis, he remains faithful to the end. His love is shown in a concrete way through his death on the cross.
Spiritual meaning: Jesus loves us individually. We are not an anonymous crowd; he knows our needs, our struggles and our weaknesses.
Jesus, the Great Shepherd
“The God of peace, who brought again from the dead that great shepherd of the sheep…”
Hebrews 13:20
The title of Great Shepherd highlights Jesus’ resurrection, his victorious power over death and his present reign over his people. He is no longer only the shepherd who dies; he is the living shepherd who leads from heaven.
Spiritual meaning: Believers are never abandoned. The risen Christ continues to guide, strengthen and sustain his Church today.
Jesus, the Chief Shepherd
“And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.”
1 Peter 5:4
The Chief Shepherd is the supreme head of the Church, the authority above all pastors and spiritual leaders, the judge and the king who will return. Every human shepherd is only a servant; Jesus alone holds absolute authority over his flock.
Spiritual meaning: His sovereignty guarantees just and eternal leadership, ensuring the safety and peace of his sheep until the end of time.
